Breathing primarily through the right nostril is associated with increased energy, alertness, and physical activity, while breathing through the left nostril is linked to calmness, relaxation, and mental clarity. This is due to the connection of right nostril breathing with the sympathetic nervous system and left nostril breathing with the parasympathetic nervous system.
Right Nostril Breathing (Pingala Nadi): Associated with: Sun, energy, physical activity, alertness, logical thinking, and the left brain. Physiological effects: Increased heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. When to use: For physical tasks, mental focus, or when needing an energy boost.
Left Nostril Breathing (Ida Nadi): Associated with: Moon, calmness, relaxation, mental clarity, emotional processing, and the right brain. Physiological effects: Decreased heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. When to use: For relaxation, meditation, sleep, or when needing to reduce stress.
Nasal Cycle: The dominant nostril naturally switches every two hours (5 ghāṭikā), a phenomenon known as the nasal cycle..
Sun Breath
The Sun god Āditya (vāreśa), causes the lagna to circumambulate 360° by due to his breath during 60 ghāṭikā (one solar earth-day).

Saṅdhi: the five ghāṭikā (one bhāva) before and after sunrise and sunset is the changing period of the breath of Sūrya. Both these saṅdhi at sunrise and sunset have a total span of 10 ghāṭikā each bringing the saṅdhyā period total to 20 ghāṭikā. These saṅdhyā clearly separate the day (दीवा divā) and the night (रात्री rātri or निशा niśā). Three Vedic devatā (त्रिमूर्ति trimūrti) rule these broad parts of the Vedic day. In nature they are Viṣṇu-Day shown yellow (sattva), Rudra-Night shown grey (tamas) and Durgā-Saṅdhyā with two colours – both of rajas guṇa. Green for budha-rajas and cyan for śukra rajas. Budha rajas is strong in the first ♈ and sixth bhāva ♍ whereas Śukra rajas is strong in twelfth ♓ and seventh ♎ bhāva.
Sattva of Guru is very strong during the daytime of Viṣṇu. The sattva of Chandra adorning the forehead of Rudra at the ājñākhya protects against every form of tamas during the nighttime ruled by Rudradeva.
Twilight-Gaṇḍānta
Most have translated saṅdhyā as twilight but that is not exactly right. There is another saṅdhi called the gaṇḍānta which is really twilight. The Lagna takes about 54 min to traverse one nakṣatra (precisely 53m 20sec). Revatī☆ – Aśvinī☆ gaṇḍānta which is right at the center of the udaya saṅdhyā kāla (sunrise saṅdhyā) lasts for about 108 minutes. This is the total twilight period of sunrise within the sunrise saṅdhyā. The sunset twilight-gaṇḍānta is smaller as it has one nakṣatra Chitrā☆ and is 54 min.
Once we place the subha graha in the natural day-chart, we can clearly see the close relationship between Jupiter (Guru बृं) and Mercury (budha बुं). This is the yoga of the day-half (divā-horā, Aho अहो) and is called the Guru-Budha Yoga or the Bhagavata Yoga. Now examine the night-half (rātri) composed of two graha – Moon (Chandra चं) and Venus (Śukra शुं). This is the Annapūrṇā Yoga or Śukra-Chandra Yoga. In this manner two extremely powerful yogas are obtained that have the power over time. An important observation at the twilight-gaṇḍānta axis is that the rajas graha manifest at this point. These are also the borders of the day-night.
Birth Time
Assuming that (a) the day of 24 hours has exactly 12 hours each of daytime and nighttime (b) and that the Sun rises at exactly 6am and sunset is at 6pm, we learn the following:
